Am heading out to Yosemite this summer, firstly to do the JMT with my brother and am then thinking on staying out for another month or so for some climbing.I have several questions I hope you can help me with:
I seem unable to reserve a permit for the entry point ( Happy Isles) for the dates we were looking at (9/10 July) Do I need to be concerned about this or can I just turn up and que that morning, or would it be worth starting at a alternative place (ie Glacier point)
I am unsure whether wilderness camping is allowed once out of the valley or do you have to keep to designated places. How much of an issue are the campsites in and arounf the valley, as again I can't seem to make a reservation at any of the main ones.
Regarding climbing, is it too hot in the valley, and assuming so where is best...Tuolumne Meadows?(I climb Trad 5.10d, and 5.12a on bolts)
How easy is it to find climbing partners, I am assuming that camp 4 is the best place to go? Is there any specific gear that I should bring ( apart from all my cams)Any other advice?

Thanks for your help

Mike,
you might want to pick an alternate trailhead for the start. doubt you will be able to get a permit the same day you will start. The Valley can be hot in July. Tuolumne will be cooler. Watch out for T-storms. Camp4 is the best place for partners, but you might try posting a note at the climbing store in the Meadows. just bring your rack.
Note: the bolted routes in T-Meadows tend to be a little runout.

hey-
the valley will be a sweltering inferno, and the meadows will be like heaven, but see for yourself. nights at elevation will get chilly, expect afternoon thundershowers that move in quickly and be weary of lightning.

1/2 of JMT permits are 1st come, 1st serve. You never have to wait more than 24 hours to start if you just show up. Also, JMT doesn't go thru Glacier Point.

Harder to find partners in the Meadows, but some people post at the store.

Don't go backpacking in the Sierras in the summer.

It's crowded.

Approximately half of wilderness permits are held for walk-ups on a first-come, first-served basis. You can get these permits for the following day. So if you want to start on a Tuesday, show up first thing on Monday morning and you may be able to get the permit you want. I recommend getting in line before the wilderness office opens. Also, I believe you can get a permit for any trailhead from any permit office. There are lots of details on wilderness permits on the yosemite web site.

Is it worth it to start at an alternate trailhead? It depends.

Is it important to you to hike every inch of the JMT, with your pack on? If so, then you need to get a permit to start at Happy Isles.

Do you just want to pretty much hike from Yosemite Valley to Mt. Whitney mostly along the JMT? Then start wherever you want. You could even dayhike with a light pack from the Valley up to Tuolumne Meadows (no permit required) and then get a permit starting from a TM trailhead. If you choose an alternative trailhead out of the valley, and you want to camp at Little Yosemite Valley, make sure that your permit allows you to do so.
