Howard was one of my good friends when I was climbing in high school. We lost touch over the years but were reunited when I became a hard-core birder and started chasing the rare birds in Orange County about six years ago. I am grateful that I got to share a number of memorable and hilarious birding adventures with him, notably the epic search for the mega rarities, Hooded Warbler and Red-Eyed Vireo in Huntington Beach's Central Park.
He was an icon in the birding world and became a mentor. He was the Ebird moderator for Riverside County for many years.
He was loved and respected by everybody in the birding world and will be missed.
He was super unique individual with a sense of humor that couldn’t be matched.

Thank you Howard and rest in peace.

I hope that Howard’s good friend Lori Conrad won’t mind that I shared these lines from her comments on Facebook.

“But I'll never forget that time in Mexico, when he saw the beautiful male Red-breasted Chat with us & uttered the infamous line: "Ohhhh God…..kill me now. I can die a happy man!" Well Howard, we're so happy to have shared your life in so many ways, & to have been a part of making you a happy man. RIP Howard King, & as Mark liked to refer to him, the kingliest of Kings.”

Dave, looking at that photo, it is my old good friend Howard. I posted on the other post of him. But looking at that photo, I can see his younger face. Probably early 80’s, he and I would go on these crazy trips to Josh, Rumba in Jacumba.... many great times with Howard. Man I always wanted to hook up with him again, he was truly a gentle sweet soul! Sad tohear I’ll never get to see him again.
Peace

I remember good times with Howard and friends back in the day.
A definite part of the Orange County local scene

It's funny that so many climbers are also devoted birders.

Ah yes, Susanville. Went there with Howard one Summer, climbed at a crag below the side of the road (dead deer carcasses there from hunters) and visited a crag somewhere off some USFS road. Shooting guns seemed to be a big pass tine in those parts.

Another time, Howard was staying with Dick Richardson in Tahoe with Dick's parents. I hitched up there and sort of "rescued" him.

I think his old car was a 1966 Ford Comet or maybe a Fairlaine, sorta a very dark blue. The nose of the car was always elevated, maybe because the rear shocks were shot? Forgot the name he had for that car, but it was classic Howard.
