Hi there,

What are alternative camping options in the Valley if Camp 4 is full?
Any good spots outside either official or unofficial?
I remember I slept by the river somewhere many many years ago but don't remember where it was.

Thanks for the help.

Worst camping of any National Park. People camp outside of the Park in the El Portal area.

Pretty much all the National parks suck for camping unfortunately.

Sometimes the Ahwahnee, I mean, The Majestic Hotel, has a cancellation. You can get in there starting at around $400 a night.

Bingo. Once you are off the ground, you are in the wilderness.

I became a fan of USFS and BLM land explicitly because of the annoying camping situation- both the cost and the scarcityof reservations- in National Parks. I like to go places and wait until sunset before I figure out where I'll camp.

Get a fire permit from any USFS station on the approaches to Yosemite, and you can legally have a campfire and dispersed camping in many places within an hour's drive to the valley. Seasonal fire restrictions may be in effect to limit that part of the experience, but plenty of legal places to sleep if you're willing to commute into the valley.

The ONLY good camping I have experienced in a NP is on the North Rim of the Black Canyon.
