In 1982, I worked the summer in NYC and recall paying 90.00 for the blue Chouinard Asolo Canyons at Paragon Sporting Goods.
These Asolo Canyons were similar high-tops and the sales guy at Paragon asked me if I was a dancer. I confessed I was not a dancer, just a climber. Then the sales guy said they were getting a bunch of dancers coming in asking for these shoes.
At the time, 90.00 was a high ticket item for me and I marveled that these dancers would pay that kind of money for the shoes and wondered what the great utility was for them.

I remember around 1991 someone telling me that the pink Boreal Lasers were getting purchased in large sizes for club wear by hipsters.
Of course, the same guy who told me that also told me that dedicated sport climbers would get their little toe removed to fit into their tight shoes better.
