Very sad. His wife is expecting their first child.
If any of us are attending the Ouray Ice meet lets plan something for his family.
With sincerest condolences to his family and close friends,
Conrad

email from his friend Albert:

Dear Jim,

Yes it is like you saw, Hari Berger died yesterday afternoon. He climbed
on the "Eiskapelle" near Salzburg, which is a sort of glacier but very small. A
huge ice shelf (20mx30mx2,5m) collapsed and Hari came under it. His 2 friends
who climbed with him were very lucky and do not have any injuries.
I cannot tell you how sad I am.

Another sad fact is, that Kirsten beard her doughter last night. She named her
Zoe, as Hari wanted it. Zoe is fine, a nice little mouse with dark hair. There
will be a fund-raiser for Kirsten and Zoe soon. As soon as (next hours) I got
the details about the fund-raiser I will put it on-line on my website
http://www.albertleichtfried.at
Please help and try to inform as many people as possible to help Kirsten and Zoe
through there worst nightmare.

Sorry to have no better news,
Albert

Ohhh...this is terrible news. My heart goes out to Kirsten and little Zoe and Hari's friends and family everywhere. Yes, Conrad, let's try to arrange something in Ouray - Hari has been such a lively cornerstone, there>

This is very tragic. His daughter arriving hours after his death. Joy and sorrow. At this time of year.

Let's get a motion afoot for the Saturday Petzl party (at Ouray) to be a tribute Hari and fundraiser for Kristen and Zoe. The folks at Petzl are suportive of this idea.

With empathy,

On 20th of Dezember 2006, Hari Berger died because of a tragic
ice-climbing-accident, an accident of the category "unpredictable". Kirsten
Buchmann, his wife, beard their doughter Zoe on 21th of December. I would like
to appeal for help for Kirsten and Zoe.
Further details, account numbers etc. you can find on

Thank you!

email from Will Gadd:

As all of you likely know (and my apologies if this is news), Hari
Berger recently died while ice bouldering in Austria. His partner,
Kirsten, had their baby daughter, Zoe, (full term and healthy!) only
hours later. It's beyond sad, but it's also the start of a new life
that will need support without Hari's physical presence.

Albert Leichtfried is a good friend of the Berger family, and is
helping with efforts to raise funds for the Hari's family. He just
sent the information below about an account to send money to if you
can help, the family is really not rich in $.

Please post the information below to any forums you think appropriate
and forward to friends who might know Hari or Kirsten. I did a quick
run through my address book but likely missed a lot of people. A
little help could go a long way at this point.

For those not familiar with sending money by wire, it's pretty
painless, just walk into the bank with the info below and get 'er done.

I've also suggested to Albert that he organize a Paypal account for
this, but it's not as common in Europe, he'll work on that Monday. My
email address does work for Paypal--if it's easier for you in this
mad holiday rush it's OK to Paypal to gadd@gravsports.com with "Hari"
in the note. If anyone wants to donate in an envelope or something
I'll collect that and the Paypal donations and take it with me to
when I go to Switzerland next week, easy. I'll also print any notes
to take to Kirsten.

I know cash is tight this time of year, but even a few $ will really
help with a very hard situation. Sorry to be so long about money, but
this is something solid we can do to help a new life move a little
easier through the world.

There will also likely be some fund-raising efforts at Ouray, more
info will come as that develops from John Evans and others working on
it, thanks.

Peace to all of you, and may we all celebrate our friends and family.
Life is never certain, but the world is a better place with all of
you in it.

Best,

WG
