This is something that should have been done decades ago.
Such a small part of our budget to mitigate so much human suffering,
directly caused by our country.

Kudos to our government for cleaning up some of our mess in the world!

Quick Facts
At least 20,000 people have been killed or injured by unexploded ordnance in Laos since the Vietnam War-era bombings ended.
About one third of the land in Laos is contaminated with unexploded ordnance.
Many cluster bomblets became buried in the earth – waiting for an unsuspecting farmer to place a shovel in the earth or the monsoon rains to uncover them.
Many farmers in Laos know their land is contaminated but can’t afford another plot. They simply have no choice but to cultivate their land.
The most common injuries victims sustain from a UXO explosion include loss of a limb, blindness, hearing loss, shrapnel wounds, and internal shock wave injuries.
Over the past four decades, fewer than 1 million of the estimated 80 million cluster munitions that failed to detonate have been cleared.

It's about time. I doubt that's enough money, but hopefully once we get our feet wet more will flow.

It will be dangerous work. Let's keep those who will be out there finding and disarming these things in our thoughts.

Shheeeee-ittt...you know how many little kids lost their lives and limbs due to their discovery of unexploded ordinances around the Mira Mar Naval Air Station in SD County?

Multiple instances of kids that would find shells adjacent to MMNAS, and throw them against a rock and blow themselves to sh#t.

I remember doing a SAR training near Fortuna Mountain (also adjacent to MMNAS) and finding one of those shells.

Goddam right it's about time we cleaned up the mess in the parts of the world where we left our sh#t.

better late than never i suppose, tho the UN, french and NGOs have been there already for decades.

ive spent a bit of time in Laos and the damage done is indescribable. its not till you fly over or go down the rivers that you see how trashed the country is. its covered in circles of a yellowish bamboo that grows in disturbed soil.

i recall visiting a place near the chinese border where demining was going on and via a translator a farmer about 30 years old (there arent many old people in Laos...) described how it was cheaper for a child to wander into an UXO area than a buffalo - as he and his wife couldnt make another buffalo....
a part of my faith in humanity died then and there.

How much will future presidents have to give to deal with the disaster Obama has been fostering in Syria? This is nothing more than a political move. He is waging his own proxy wars while pretending to care about previous ones

The U.S. Military should not be allowed to spend money for new weapons systems until all of these things are cleaned up in foreign countries. There is nothing worse than putting children at risk with these devices. If we are going to conduct operations overseas, let's send in our troops to clean up these areas.
