Riley, it's caused by hot air rising from Washington DC and meeting the cooler air of the mountains. Watch out, other states will also start becoming deluged and flooded, especially those with mountains.

I was in the Washington Mutual Building (closest building in that shot) when it got hit. I didn't even know it hit until an hour later when someone told me. Thunder from accross the city was way louder.
Science....Crazy stuff.

thats pretty must SOP around here. we get just tons of rockin thunderstorms around here, i love sitting in my living room watching the lighting bang off the top of sears and hancock.
last year we just barely got off the house rig scaffold at the Kluckzynski (or however you spell it) federal building as a storm rolled in. the rig was nearly the tallest metal object on top of the building (74 floors) and it took a half hour to drive it into the garage while nailed sears three blocks away.
damn near peed maself.
wish i photographical talents up to the job.
