They've made plenty of green off me in 18 years, so I called up and told them that lots of card companies want my business that give perks and don't charge an annual fee.
He tried to refuse to nix the fee, so I reminded him that I pay off my card every month, and if he said no then I wanted to close the account immediately.
"Uh,... please hold."
He kicked me upstairs where after a few more efforts on their part, they acquiesced.
My annual fee was waived. They are issuing me a "special" card.
If you use AMEX give it a try.

Actually, that was the sarcastic response I gave the manager.
"What, you mean like those guys in the special olympics?"
"Uh,.. no sir, I was just trying to say that we value your business."
So Pete, does that mean 10 trips to the Valley are in the offing?

Great minds float downriver at the same pace.
Anyway you seem to be one of Dan's friends, so here's a little special olympics that I've always admired.

Yeah, Dan was beyond cool, and we were acquainted, but when you live a life of ,.. dangerous means,... then sometimes the survivor bares the burden.
Thanks Cos, but I could never stomach tobacco, and could not even appreciate ethanol until well into my fifties, so I plan to be around a few more decades.
BTW
I am the man.

They don't want you to pay off your card every month. They want you to carry a balance they can charge usurious rates for..
If you want really good treatment, put ten grand on the card and tell them you'll declare bankruptcy unless they give you perks.

They probably looked at your purchasing history and decided that getting the merchant's cut off your expenditures was worth waiving the fee. Amex gets appx. 3% of every dollar a merchant rings up using their cards.
So tell us, Ron. Have they made a few dollars off your spending over those years? Enough to make the yearly fee chicken scratch?

You think they're in it as a public service? Even if you pay it off every month they make bank.

AMEX takes a 3% cut from the merchant. Other CCs only 1%-2%.
Difference being, AMEX is their own bank, the others are a service that require a bank backing them.
Only reason for most avg Joe to have AMEX is if you shop Costco, as they don't take any other cards. They have some reward type things that can be great for very special, niche users. And they are better than other companies with dispute resolution (they take your side immediately), also some replacement of goods benefits that are very good. But for most people, you can get a good rewards card elsewhere.
They used to attempt to tout AMEX as some "prestige" thing, which is LOL funny to me. Nobody gives a sh#t what color your effin credit card is. I've had top heap platinum cards from providers since I was about 23 years old. That and $3 gets me a cup of coffee.
The need to announce to the Taco that you whined to your service provider to drop some penny ante fee is extra special.

Reilly, that was my point - that they make their money off the merchant accounts. They probably have a very simple formula as to how much a person has spent in the last year as to how "valuable" that customer is.
Meanwhile, I think Ron was mentioning it in the spirit of suggesting others too could reduce their annual fees.
I did similar with my web hosting renewal this year(it went up an absurd amount, I complained, they put it back to the same fee as previous year). I know someone who have complained about their cable fees every year for some time now, and gets the price rolled back.
However, a company will never back down if they have nothing to lose, and to Ron and others - if it is waived, make sure you know the facts - is this just for the current year? Next year will you have to work them again?

You are right Happie, hence the title of the thread, but ECIYA has always been a prick in my regard.
He thinks scorning my height is an insult, but I take it as a compliment since six footers complain about reaching my bolts. I doubt he can make the same claim (since, like most bullies, he is a coward that hides his identity).

Canceled my AmerX card long ago. What's the benefit to it anymore without Costco? There doesn't seem to be one.
