hey there say, all...
i just came to the computer and turned it on, and it said:
do not turn your computer off, waiting for update to complete...
well, i DID NOT want it to update...
this did it, a few times before and it seemed to make it SLOW...
thus, i did a system restore, and went BACK to before the update and all was well...
so now, oh my, HERE it is again... perhaps trying to update the same stuff, again??
how do i set this to NOT update unless i allow it... i can't find that 'stuff to use'...
thanks guys... the guy at the computer store, told me it is not
always good, some of these update, etc...
well, which are good:
the brower, or flash?
but THIS is some microsoft update...

Hey Neebs
Go to the control panel and select the options shown below.
Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\Change setting
When you get to the Change Settings screen, you can stop the automatic updates by selecting the item to not update automatically.
Cheers.

Once you do that, if you ever do any more Windows updates... even manually... Microshaft "kindly" turns automatic updates back on "for" you.
So, if you ever do any manual updates, you'll have to go back into the Windows update settings and change it back to the no-updates setting again.
Microshaft's got your back.

In Windows 7
Right click -- "My Computer"
Click "Manage"
Click "Services and Applications"
Click "Services"
In "Services" double click "Windows Update"
Stop the service and then disable it.
Then Micro idiots will not re-enable it until you actually do it in the services console again yourself ....

hey there say, ...thanks so very very much, to all of you:
ShawnInPaso...
madbolter1...
WBraun...
say, 10b4me:
it seems like everytime it has updated, suddenly the comupter is taking
too long to start up again... and the trouble that i had--just before i took this in to get fixed, was:
it TOOK about 7 min, to even WORK once i turned it on, :O
(never did, but little by little, somehow it got to this point)...
the guy said it was the slowest computer he ever saw, :O
and, he was not sure how to even fix it...
(did not charge me though, unless it could not be solved by doing the microsoft 10 free update) ...
well, he DID that and it actually started working, and turned on FAST and i could see the desktop loaded within seconds and not seven min...
and then, wow, i could click to get on line and did not have to wait an extra 1-2 min... wow...
so,then, i told him that sometimes the computer would do auto updates and i was afraid something would go wrong again...
he did say, i could do something to only allow CERTAIN updates but,
i had asked him THIS on the phone, so thus, not sure what i should do...
oh, NEW NOTE:
werner, will those instructions work for windows 10, as well.. ?
i AM going there now, to see how the DIRECTIONS from both of you here,
might work...
thanks...
now, after this last update, i think? the computer is okay, but,
the last two that did this, made it take too long to load--though only about 1-2 min, but, enough to get me worried...

You didn't say which manufacturer or operating system you have, but some apparently guessed closely. When you boot up, do you see this?
