Hi everyone:

I've had these two STUBAI AUSTRIA KS-GRIFF 3000 crabainers for a long time and I've never quite known what are they designed for?

They are 170mm long, they have a twist lock gate and a lower gate.

If anyone knows, I'd appreciate the information.

Cheers

They double as brass knuckles.

There's an old emergency rappel set up I saw a long time ago that wrapped the rope along the load bearing side of a large carabiner 2-4x and then you gripped like hell to keep control. Needless to say, it was a last ditch option like if you dropped everything else.

Maybe those bumps on the load bearing side were to space the wraps out a bit so the rope didn't get bunched up at one end so easily.

That's a weird looking piece of equipment, for sure.

Yep....that's a carabiner. Glad I could be of service.

Maybe they were designed for use with the Bachmann knot,
which wraps around the spine and is used like a prusik (for ascending a rope).
The biner is then used to loosen the knot, so it can be moved up the rope.

I bow to Clint's opinion. As a "biner-pundit"------I haven't a clue as to the age and possible special use of your biner.

yes, turns out that they are precisely to be used with a Bachman knot for rope ascending. As for the age, they are about 25-30yrs old....
