The official Petzl dealer in China, Snowbird Rope Assess Technical Service, has announced that they found counterfeit Petzl M35 SL Attache locking biners are being sold on Chinese market, through retail stores and online site "taobao". Snowbird estimated that a total of 50,000 counterfeit biners were produced. If you have purchased any Attache M35 SL in China and are in doubt, please contact Snowbird at:

Good reason to buy only from certified Petzl dealers. No wonder the Chinese who can afford it come to the US to shop. My buddies who do business in China, long ago, gave up on buying anything there. Buy whatever it is, and its fake... no electronics inside, etc.
And then there's the problem of fake, sometimes poisonous, food in China. A colleague of a friend died drinking fake alcohol, from a bar in Shenzhen, that had some cheap industrial chemical included. I think this info came from the autopsy. No official investigation, no prosecution, but 2 kids in San Francisco no longer have a father! I wish I was making this story up.

It does seem that setting up a factory in China is a guarantee this will occur. Either a manager rips off the plans and runs them in another factory or as Fortmental says, same factory runs some nonfficial items. "North Face" jackets can be had all over there for a a steep discount. (not really North Face although they are marked as such) I noticed that it was within a year of moving most production to China from Canada that the superb Canadian Mfg Arc'terex had ebay overflowing with inexpensive "Arx'terex" products too. Petzl maintains that the 4 items in question are not made in China.
Pretty good list of counterfeit items here: http://thecounterfeitreport.com/index.php and how to differentiate as some are easy to spot the fake (not in this case unfortunately).
So, where's these $20 Camalots now? LOL

All my Petzl Attache biners were made in Utah. I don't think that has changed.

Fake climbing gear, poisoned food, lead paint on kid's toys, poisonous toothpaste, occupation of Tibet, Tiananmen Square and other brutal crackdowns on their own citizens, horrible pollution, deplorable working conditions... Is there any reason not to boycott China?

at least the Chinese know how to reward this behavior. A bullet to the head.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Chinese_milk_scandal
The issue raised concerns about food safety and political corruption in China, and damaged the reputation of China's food exports, with at least 11 countries stopping all imports of Chinese dairy products.
A number of criminal prosecutions occurred, with two people being executed, another given a suspended death penalty, three others receiving life imprisonment, two receiving 15-year jail terms,[6] and seven local government officials, as well as the Director of the Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) being fired or forced to resign.[7]

THis SUX. OK, so how do you know if you have a bogus one? Testing to failure isn't helpful if you want to use the thing.
