There are 3 decent huts near Truckee. The Bradley Hut is newest and near Squaw Valley. The Peter Grubb hut is rougher and is near Castle Peak. The Benson Hut is high on the Pacific Crest on Anderson Peak. They all access great backcountry skiing.

I would like to give a shout out to the Pear Lake Hut in the Sequoia (west side.) The spring skiing around there is awesome. Some of the finest corn the Sierra has to offer.

Peter Rabbit on Berthoud was my first experience. Burnt my hand quite badly with bacon grease and was in pain most of the night after partying at the gnomeshoe most of the day. The good ole days in Fraser.

all the coloradicals who come to california scoff at our shitty cabins around tahoe. can't blame them. they are really raunchy. i'd rather sleep outside.
what ive seen of the 10th mtn and san juan cabins in CO, those are legit.
the "huts" in austria are more like hotels with chefs, hot showers and full bars. you ski hut to hut with a tiny pack and eat and sleep well every night. why we can't have something like that here is beyond me.
$hit, don't get me started on the canadian huts and their skiing...
the alaska mountaineering group huts are pretty awesome too, eklutna traverse, mint, the new Snowbird hut. from what I've seen, the huts around tahoe are the crappiest by a long shot. are they better down south?

Very cool idea for a thread.
There's 3 on Whistler mountain. 1 within the boundary, a stones throw from one of the busiest places on both mountains called Pika's manor. Unfortunately it's roof caved in partially about 10yrs ago. Still a good spot to stop & get out of the wind if you need to although it's somewhat elusive to find.
The other 2 are outside of the boundary, the most used & easiest to locate is called the khyber hut or the smokeshack. It's on top of what's called million dollar ridge & is a great place to warm up before riding 3500' of old growth. Maybe Bruce Kay will see this & know a bit more about how it was built & who built it & why. I think it has another name but can't recall.
The 3rd & nicest is called James O's and was built in memorial of one James O who was a local ripper who was actually murdered BITD. This one is the hardest to find but also the coolest. It is outside of the ski area & tucked away nicely in the woods. I know some of the dudes who helped to build it & it's pretty cool the efforts they put in to get lumber & supplies up there while eluding the man who definitely would not have approved.
I may have some pics of these on my old hard drive, I'll try & dig em up sometime. There's lots in the BC around here that are well maintained and often used in both summer & winter.

Just returning home from a week at the Valhalla Mountain Touring hut in British Columbia. Awesome skiing and terrain, the hut is accessed via snow cat so it's more economical than a helicopter accessed hut. Here's a taste of what we experienced:
Some major excitement while ascending the ridge, the entire bowl avalanched from our skin track. The crown was 4 ft. or more and ran for almost a 1/2 mile resulting in a class 3.5 avalanche that took out old spruce trees. An event none of our crew will ever forget:
The safe route up to the summit:
I would highly recommend Valhalla Mountain Tours, they accommodate both guided and unguided groups. The accommodations are stellar and the owners Jasmine and Evan are awesome!
I'm certain they'll forever remember the Ghoulwe Mountaineering Club's stay at their hut:

Nice Charlie D, and Mike M. Love the pictures. I spent one night outside Ostrander 15 years ago. Always wished that I had gone back and stayed longer. No pictures for me. Never carried a camera. Another big regret. I can still see it in my minds eye, but I can't share the view.

So many huts, so little time. Here's one in the Coast Range, awesome terrain!
Surely ST you can share some pictures of other British Columbia huts. Not to mention the home range hut up above the Rock Creek Winter Lodge (a tent with a wood stove, a big improvement over the old plywood geodesic dome at Mosquito Flat from days of old).

8900' Mt Pinos west of Tejon Pass/ Centail So Cal used to hold a pretty good winter snowpack pre- global warming. I lived there in the mid 90's and was aware the locals maintained an under-the- radar bivy hut at the base of the best powder glades. I used to get up there as well in the early-mid '90s (just XC stuff though) and it was great, at least for local stuff. Pretty pathetic nowadays.

How about some of the not so well constructed snow cave type huts. I think there are even a few here in so dak. They seem to be very cool and blend in with the natural environment. May or May not be legal but seem harmless.
