I know a local guide who just signed up for some AMGA courses(AMGA Alpine Guide & Advanced Rock Guide), and mentioned that it is a chunk of money, as we all know.

Got me wondering about what a guide has got to do, workwise(guiding, not delivering pizza or working at Walmart), to pay off those various courses.

Surely there are math types here who would like to crunch numbers and give us an idea on how many days at such and such a fee(or cut, for those working through a service).

It would be interesting to know, for instance, how many days a fresh of the grill person with that Single Pitch AMGA cert, working for a service has to put in to break even on the course fee.

I realize there are a lot of variables(different fees for a day out, recert fees), and unknowns (cost of fuel, housing and transportation to take the course) but...well,maybe someone will get OCD enough to forget they have other things to do, and will crate a monster spread sheet...hahah

Most folks don't last long in guiding, so it's kinda hard to say how valuable they are for that.

The payoff on these courses is not all monetary. lol guiding is not very monetarily rewarding for all but the most well known and established. Even for them I think the best you can say is they make an ok living.

Knowledge can lead to survival, and if you find the guiding lifestyle your cup of tea then of course the classes will have been professionally worthwhile.

I have a few friends who are IFMGA guides. For work they guide back country skiing, rock and ice climbing, and mountaineering. They also teach classes for the AMGA and avi classes.

On a good day they can make $1000 with tips, most days are $250ish. In general they make +/- 40k a year.

I know about the philosophical angles.... I was hoping to get some mathy geek to show formulas such as: Cost of a particular Cert divided by X amount per day earned belaying noobs on toprope, working for a service at such and such area, equals Number of Days grinding away to make the amount paid for cert...

Though, I suppose if that was posted, it would end up being about what I make selling hair accessories or t-shirts....
