Cool. I didn't venture in there until last fall. I'd heard there used to be trees in there... what happened to them?

Excuse my ignorance but where is The Grotto? Is that somewhere along highway 108/120 around the 120/108 split? That rock looks chossy, what's it like?

yeah. 108 near sonora. And if by chossy you mean super sweet, then yes.

It's a popular area, so if it was chossy to begin with, it's sure cleaned up. Columnular basalt.

The trees disappeared with the choss. Falling refigerators and household appliance sized rocks are more effective than chainsaws. That was a beautiful dogwood, or was it a buckeye? Can't remember. I started climbing there in '93 I think. McClannahan was always lurking around asking for belays. The climbing is better than it looks.

Yep, and great training for the other place. You know where I mean. Been a while since I spent time up there.

I was surprised to see that a photo of the other place made it into R&I this month!

Sketch,

I beleive the shoes were Dolomites. I had gotten a couple of free pairs. You might ask Mr. Large I think he was trying them out.

I always looked at the rock when I travelled from the East Bay to Columbia, Cedar Ridge, Sonora Pass in the mid-1970s, but it always looked dirty and chossy and I figured there was enough good rock around not to bother. I guess I should have expored a bit closer.

"You might ask Mr. Large"...

Sorry. I remember I was wearing my pink lace panties and silk stockings that day, but don't remember what shoes I used.

The photo was a Tim Kemple shot of Justin, fully referenced as JH. Probably could have been a little more discrete.

The shoes in the first few shots are Scarpa Le Menstrels (sp?). Those were super stiff and would edge like mad but had no sensitivity.
