Hello ST Friends,
It's a shot in the dark, but does anyone recognize this photo? I believe it depicts a German Mountain Troop in 1936, but have no reference for the author or where the photo came from. Any suggestions?

it looks familiar, but it is a common period style of photograph so cain't swear i have it anywhere, and i dont have time this week to troll for it.
i would use "Gebirgstruppen" as default keyword in google image searches, for instance.
Have you checked the US edition of the 1934 German training manual?
http://www.thortrains.net/downloads/german-mountain-warfare.pdf
i would also try the dav (although the search is crude and they have a minimal number of images digitized):
http://www.historisches-alpenarchiv.org/
lots of re-enactor/groupie sites out there, this is one of the least creepy ones:
http://www.gebirgsjaeger.4mg.com/
as word of caution: searching for anything nazi-related (esp. military) quickly gets you into weird places. i always use a scraper and sometimes even some extra ice. not that any of that stops the nsa.

That looks like a Mauser K98 he's slinging. I have one made in 1917 at Obernsdorf:
This rifle was the standard battle rifle used by the Germans in WWII, but a small number were issued to the Alpenkorps during WWI.
It weighs 10 pounds without the bayonet or ammunition. I've never tried carrying it while climbing, that guy looks pretty stout with all that kit.

I found your photo on this site. It appears to be a blog by a group of contemporary enthusiasts of the various German Mountain divisions. It is not clear to me whether to photo is old, or of a re-enactment, which this group seems to do.
Edit: There is a facebook page for Gebirgsjäger Regiment 100 which is likely posted by the group linked above. There is a huge gallery there. Many of the photos are clearly authentic, others from re-enactments. Your picture is there with no caption or identification. I suppose you could contact them and find out.

Thanks ksolem, I'm gonna check that out. I've been in many of the places they frequented, Bad Tolz, Berchesgarden, Garmisch, Oberammergau, to name a few. The walls of one of the barracks I stayed in, still had the needlegun racks in the walls.
