In the spirit of the WOS beer prizes and numerous other "ID this climbing route" beer incentives, I hereby offer up my contest to further my own self gratification needs. All you have to do is tell me what Climbing magazine name and volume a certain back cover picture appeared in approximately 1976 - 1978.
The prize:
2 cases of domestic beer (I send PayPal or personal check to your address).
The picture to search for:
Ok, here's the story which you will either find incredibly funny or pathetic. I worked as a bartender at the Ahwahnee hotel during the mid 70's to early 80's. I climbed during the day and slung cocktails to the needy at night. One summer I had built up a fairly large aid rack but as the season ended and I was scheduled to return to UCSB, I ran out of money. This conflicted with my plan to veg out in front of a TV in my frat room as I had no TV. My solution was simple, trade my climbing rack for a TV and then buy a new rack the following summer when I planed to return to Yosemite and the Ahwahnee.
My then girlfriend was the Ranger at "Sunnyside" as it was known then. She later became a Superintendent of a National Park but that's another story. So I sneak over to Camp 4 and quickly pinned a note to the bulletin board. At the time it made perfect sense to me. It read:
Will trade my climbing rack for a color TV
Not the exact photo, but it should look something like this.
I never heard anything regarding my camp 4 note but the next summer when I hooked back up with my girlfriend, the first thing she did was start laughing at me (know the feeling boys?). She said something to the effect: you know the dumb ass note you left on the C4 board? Well somebody took a picture of it and it appeared as a blow-up on the back cover of a climbing magazine." I said cool, not realizing that my girlfriend and everyone else thought it was the most ridiculous thing that that had ever seen. "What magazine was it?" She replied. "I duhno, but it sure was lame".
So I've never seen it but I would love to. If you can find it I'll pay up for your hard work of flipping through a couple of 70's vintage climbing mags. It either appear on the very back cover or inside back cover of one of the major names between 1976 and 1978. Good luck,
Theo

Hey Theo,
Long time, no post. Glad to see you're still lurking out there.
I am not home at present so can't look to see, but the photo that comes to mind might be in the famous picture book Yosemite Climber. There are photos of the Camp 4 bulletin board from that era, so maybe your note appears there? In fact, so famous were the bulletin board photos in Yosemite Climber that you saw people taking pictures of the board nearly every day. Myself included. The other two photos from that book which are commonly duplicated are the one of Long, Bridwell and Westbay in El Cap Meadow, and of Richard Nipper Harrison stretched out on top of the Boot Flake.
If your photo appears there, please save me some beer! [I ain't getting any for WoS, that's fer sure...]

Pretty funny story!
I'd have done the trade the other way around, though.
My TV for a rack!
By the way, I have a TV if you have a rack and want to make it a go...LOL

nothing about a TV on the pic in "Yosemite Climber"
just checked.
However, it would be cool to see where are all the people named in that pic from Yosemite Climber, e.g.
Bethy Kirby had her gear stolen.- $100 reward
Sean Plunkett- had a message addressed to him from Leigh Seligm.... Apparently there was space at Whitewolf.
Ron Schwartz- had a message addressed to him from Michael
Dell Rockwell lost a climbing guide book.
Ralph McKenzie(?) something about vroomin.
creating separate thread for this...

Are you building a rack in the same manner in which one eats an elephant?

Rod McKenzie was one of my room mates in the Tenaya Dorms (He was a Ahwahnee Dinning Room host at the time). As I had read Downward Bound, I knew he was considered an "average climber". So I asked him to go bouldering near swan slab one time in hope he could show me some good technique on some of the more difficult problems that I couldn't figure out. He couldn't. He looked pretty bad on everything. So on that day we were equals I guess.
Hey! Start thumbing through those 70's mags, 2 case of beer could get you up a couple of new wave A4 pitches at least!
