Supertopo Members,

After our tragic incident over at HST with our friend and fellow
member Larry Conn, and then this incident with Matthew Greene
prompted us to speed up the introduction of this form that will
hopefully prevent such incident in the future or at the least
aide SAR in their success. Please take advantage of it and use
this simple form on all your trips no matter what the difficulty
of it may be.

Great idea.

Great idea, but:

This needs to be on an easily accessed (and remembered) website, and a simple one-page form.

This is an incredibly good idea. Nice work and thought.

Everyone who goes into the back-country should see this.

With that in mind, can I suggest that you r-epost with a new thread title? Something explicit. I'm worried this very good idea is being missed.

Something like: 'New Standard Form to Assist in SAR Efforts. Please read'

Again, great work and thought. Thanks for putting this together.

Hi Mister E,

Please pass the word thru facebook, e-mail, post on other websites,
friends or whichever way you can!
It started out longer but shortened it to include the most
important information needed. After Matthew's disappearance it
was fine tuned a bit. A lot of info was learned during the search
of Larry which help me with asking for the info that was most
useful and important for aiding in SAR's success.

Hi Stzzo,

Friends may forget details that may have a bearing on the success
of a search by SAR. They may also not be easily reached or may
not really be into our sport and understand the nuances involved.
Also when planing a trip or climb it is easier to write out the
details at the same time then paste and copy it to this form, this
way its in your own words and not someone else's interpretation.

On one hand, I can see the value in that form for SAR.

But I think it's too much for most people to bother with. Shorter and simpler would probably be better. You'd get better rates of compliance.

Even just calling or texting a good friend or relative to let them know where you're going and when (worst case) you will return is enough to give a pretty big leg up to SAR.

Not really, that is what Larry did, and though this form would
probably not have saved his life, but it very well may have made
the preliminary search for him successful, and not put almost
40 SAR members, 2 choppers, and some civilian search parties at
risk, also not have the family wait 8 months before the remains
were found. I would hope that when one has family commitments, job
commitments, one would take things a little more seriously than
just leaving a text. I value my life, and the life of those who
will have to come searching for me, and definitely do not want to
put my family members, and friends through the anguish of not
knowing what happened to me. Not trying to rag on you, things
happen in the backcountry out of our control and the more info
SAR has at their disposal the better the chance of our survival.
If one is bothered by the long form they will be by the short
form, how long of a form is our lives worth is the question on
should ask?

I vote for shorter and simpler.

Maybe Chris Mac could establish a special section on this forum for posting these?

And the suggestion for a phone app is great!

Hi Jan,

Lived in Naha for a year back in the 80's, whereabouts in Okinawa do/did you live?
