Has anyone been up there lately? How much snow is on the approach and is it passable?

To get to north arete you will have to walk on snow at some point. If I was going I wouldn't bring crampons or axe, but would have some summer gaiters to keep the snow out. Have not been to BCS in particular but been in Sierra. Snow levels are low compared to normal years, and usually there is snow above 12K, with small avoidable patches lower.

I think on the east and north sides, as Vitaly said, expect snow. Based on what I can see from Fresno on the west side of Mt. Goddard, it already looks like very late June for snow accumulation.

Thanks guys. I'll post a Trip Report when we get back. If we are successful, that is, if we bail; I will simply drink heavily.

I love it when Californians ask if there is snow on the approach.

"Ewwww, snow!" ;-)

I climbed in the Sawtooths the weekend before and before last and the north ridge of Conness last weekend. There is still a lot of snow. This is my favorite season to climb in the high sierras no bug, less people , and a little snow to make it more alpine.

Go get it!!

Someone hold my drink while I punch Reilly in the mouf.

I bet he's a Cascade Cl*#ks@cker that enjoys spraying about how horribly wet the weather is up there more than he enjoys the climbing itself.

I was up there last weekend. Plenty of snow on the approach, starting basically when you veer off the main trail past the Gem Lakes. Approach shoes worked just fine, although they got soaked on the descent when the snow was soft, of course. I had a shorty axe just in case and it provided some comfort at a couple short, steeper sections of the approach, but I didn't actually need it and wouldn't bring it again.
