If any of you listen to Enormocast, a great climbing podcast, you may have heard an interview recently with Kevin Landolt, a 24 year old climber and artist from Fort Collins, CO. In the extremely frank interview Kevin talks about his fight with leukemia and how climbing gives him hope and provides meaning in his life. I thought it was profound and inspirational.

Kevin died on March 15 after a failed bone marrow transplant and other failed treatments.

RIP

He had a great blog as well if interested.

Oh man... I listened to that podcast recently. I'm so sorry to hear that. He had a good voice while he was here. I'm glad I got a chance to be touched by it.

Rest well Kevin.

I was tremendously moved by that podcast, too. Wish I'd had the chance to meet him. He sounded like a righteous guy. Couldn't decide whether to laugh or cry over his story about getting a DUI on the same day he got the news of his cancer relapse.

Oh God, I'm so sorry to hear that. He had posted a blog in late December about a day out with Jack, that was so very touching. I had no idea his cancer was so advanced....damn, it's so lousy, especially when someone is so young. My heart goes out to his friends and family...may you all find comfort somehow.............

Never heard of the dude, but that is irrelevant. I feel for the man. May God bless him, and may he rest in peace.

I've never met Kevin. However, I had heard the enormocast podcast with him, and I thought he sounded like a really cool guy. A passionate climber, and a solid all around dude. I looked up some of his posts on MP.com and discovered that he really enjoyed climbing on Greyrock.

Back in February when I was hiking the Greyrock meadows trail I came upon this boulder. It likely had never been climbed. So I decided to brush off some holds and start trying one of the most obvious lines on it. Well, the weather became lousy through March and April and I could never get back to it.

When I heard of his passing, I just felt really sad. I had felt sure that one of the good guys would win this round. But the universe has a cruel sense of humor...or maybe it just doesn't care either way. Anyhow, I decided I would dedicate this boulder to him if I could complete this line.

Last week, on Tuesday, I hiked back up to it to try it out. I was really close to linking it all together. The moves felt incredibly tenuous and I was just too tired to make an ascent. So today I hiked back up there again, rested and motivated.
I was greeted by an odd fog. But the rock was shockingly dry and sticky.

After a brief warm up, I fired the line. Smooth and solid. Decided to climb it a second time, and it felt even better!

Anyway, like I said, I never knew Kevin. However, I have to imagine that maybe he would enjoy climbing on this boulder...so I dubbed it the Kevin Landolt Memorial Boulder.
