After many many years away from climbing due to injury and well just life, mainly two awesome little kids, I have decided to do my first "real" wall this year. I have been slowly replacing and upgrading my gear and one item was replacing my yellow Jumars. I have been puttzing around with my new Petzl ascenders and really like them. To be honest the only thing that even gives me the remotest pause about doing a wall is following a traverse with ascenders. I have read the horror stories of ascenders popping off and it got me wondering why I rarely see people jugging with a set up like this:
I know it wouldn't keep it from skipping but at least it would keep it on the rope. Besides loss of time and being a slight inconvenience is there a reason not to put a biner through the top eye capturing the rope with it?

I always jug with a biner through the top of my ascender, as do most of the people I have climbed with. Even when I am leapfrogging with a Grigri.

Thanks, this is why I ask. How about a MicroTrax back up?

I keep a biner like that on my lower ascender for general cleaning.
For traversing terrain, using the gri-gri in place of the lower jug is the way to go.
For horizontal shite, I like to clip clean using the gri-gri as my self- belay.

Read what Moof says (good advise) ....

Good advice. The last thing I want is Werner standing over my body mumbling what a dumbass this guy was for knot backing up my system.

I also agree with the gri gri as the lower ascender on traverses. Also FWIW I don't use biners on top of my ascenders, but I do always use a gri gri as a backup.

If you are worried about the ascender popping off because it misalligns then consider using a minibiner at the BOTTOM hole to keep everything lined up under tension.
This is a pain when passing placements but solves the fundamental problem.
Back yourself up, of course, if you don't like the situation that you are facing.
