a place where man dreams to become more than he is

Well, another year has come and gone like last night's In N Out burger. Strange thing is that as my birthday looms closer, I feel as if I just had one...Does this mean that i'm getting old? I don't feel old; perhaps this is one of the quirks that decends upon us with age like New York pigeons to anything edible.

Another thing, what is it about people always dreading getting older? Is it because our country is so jaded about growing old, and being half pumped full of plastic is as acceptable as brushing your teeth, that we have forgotten along the way what many other cultures value: that getting older means getting wiser. Yes, it is true your hair will fall out, so might your teeth, all the clothes you once thought were cool have been incenerated as well as any pictures showing you actually wearing them, and you will, as nature dictates gradually gravitate towards the floor. But let this process not be what your mind lingers on as the days fly by, instead look forward to getting better with age, like a fine cabernet sauvignon left in a well cooled cellar for decades. I bring this up not because a. I will most likely look the same for another forty years, nor b. because I am simply young and optimistic.

My hope for us all is that as we mature, we able to realize what is important to us: being healthy, being happy and being able to take what life gives us no matter what and strive to walk away with a newfound outlook on something.

Anyway, i'll get off of my soap box for now. Hopefully if you read this, regardless of whether you agree or not, you will have a new outlook on the subject. That, after all, is what the essence of growing older is all about.

Not in King Lear's case; that is, getting wiser with age. He doesn't get smart until he is broken on the heath. Before that, he acts very much the fool, at least with regard to his daughters and their love for him. No fool like an old fool?

Gotta love those Francis Bacon quotes!

The thing about hardcore climbers is that they never seem to age much....and in my dad's case he's just petrifying and says that age means someone else gets to lead

10 days until i ring up another year, and i'm fighting it tooth and nail like i do every year. i'll grant that wisdom is a benefit, but too many people tick off decades like warmups, and have nothing to show for it intellectually.

degeneration, on the other hand, seems to be a given. i don't like that i actually feel stiff and creaky after a night w/ a blanket on the ground now. i'm glad that i can still climb for 3 full(none of this up at noon, drinking by 3 crap) w/ almost nothing to show in terms of skin damage and muscle soreness. watching those a few miles ahead of me on this road leaves me little faith that this will continue to be the case.

time to start looking at buying a piolet and talking about purity alpinism

Ouch!

Wisdom VS Wealth. Strive for a balance. A skinny wise soul might benefit from a fat carcass.

Or as the old Polish Philosopher, Pastoral Apocalypse said,

alas, I had only soup".

Ninja my Dear,
Now that I know your Nom de Climb, get back to your books so Dad won't have to go back to work.
By the way, the pics were great once I figured out how to get to them on this infernal machine.
