hey there say, all...

an 'aquaintance' older western actor, that me and a few others have visited, on occasions, at festival, a few times, well:

he acted in some episodes of laramie and wagontrain, with this actor...
i had not seen his name in any 'quest talk' line-ups, over the years, so
was curious to see if he was still around, etc...
then, too,
was curious who he was, etc--so i looked his name up and saw this info:

was an American television actor who, as an activist in the environmental movement, worked for the establishment of the first Earth Day, observed on April 22, 1970. He was a member of the Sierra Club and a founder of the ecological interest group, Wilderness World.[2] In his acting career, Hayes appeared primarily on Westerns, but he also had starring or recurring roles in several series, including The Everglades, The Rounders, and Lassie.[3]

HERE is the PART THAT I WAS CURIUOS ABOUT:

Hayes graduated in 1952 from nearby Stanford University in Palo Alto with a degree in foreign relations. At Stanford, Hayes met a young Slovak student, Vladimir Kovalik, who would become his best friend for life. The two had a passion for climbing and were particularly active in the Stanford Alpine Club. Together they climbed many peaks of the Sierra Nevadas and beyond. They also fought with considerable success to protect the pristine beauty of Grand Canyon National Park.[2]

THE SIERRA NEVADA adventures...
course, now as to this... sometimes we are not sure if the media
means climbing as REAL rock type climbing... or
means climbing as REAL hike-trail type climbing...

Together they climbed many peaks of the Sierra Nevadas and beyond.

so i was JUST CURIOUS if any of you all here, from the older guys
had ever HEARD of him and his friend...

or if you had seen them around, etc...

seemed like he loved the great out doors, as we all do here...

While I never met Ron Hayes, I know his son, Peter Hayes, who now lives in the SLC area. Pete would occasionally refer to climbs his father had done but that is as fas as it went. I have noticed that Ron did a FA on the horror-choss of Mt Morrison in the Sierra Nevada range years ago.

hey there say, levy...

wow, thanks for sharing...

it is just very intesting to know that certain names that we ran into, in childhood, were out doing lots of greatoutdoor stuff that we, as kids, were just barely starting to think or dream about...

though, for me, i just dreamed of wanting a horse, and hiking in the woods or fields and not so much climbing huge rocks... :)

thanks so much for sharing... hope we get a few more nice shares, as well...

will bump this from time to time....

I found Ron Hayes in the 1950 Stanford Alpine Club group photo:

He's the guy in the back row in the white t-shirt.

I haven't heard of these guys before, but many people have climbed over the years. A google search yields this article which involves the two of them:

Some good material here on Ron Hayes. (His life also had a Grand Canyon chapter or two...):

A more recent issue of this publication has some good photos of him rowing large boats through big water. I have to search for that but will do so soon.

Ron died in 2004. His son, Peter, wrote an obit. for Rock&Ice. As Jeff mentioned, Peter died yesterday evening.

Thanks for posting the info about Peter Hayes here. Very sad to see he checked out so early. He obviously was a positive force in many kids' lives.
