cavemonkey, there's some good craggin above christchurch, but i would head first to castle hill, a bouldering area an hour or two west of town, where you can meet lots of locals in an awesome setting, and take it from there, ss

If you can't have a good time in NZ, you don't know what a good time is.

hey there say, cavemonkey... a volcano, just 'went off' a few days agao...
planes were intertupted, too....
BUT--from what i heard, all is well now....
good that you missed this...
hoping it does not happen again, or that it does not trigger earthquakes...
depending on where you stay, some areas have been having them off and on, for quite a spell...
happy safe trip, and hope you find special places for
climbing, etc...
:)

My favorite place of my 10 weeks on the south island was Stewart Island - yeah it is a separate island, obviously. It was an afternoon's ferry ride from the southern tip of the south island. Did get rained on plenty but still enjoyed the rain forest trekking past tree ferns to a thing called the Chocolate Swamp and place called The Gutter on the beach. It was summer but we barely swam at all - cool weather and cool water. We saw a few penguins and caught a few fish. There were very few other tourists and they were also the backpacker crowd there for the nature.
The Franz-Josef Glacier is a must see, on the west coast of the South Island. And I still regret not doing the adventurous trek over the glacier and into Mt Cook National Park.
It was 1990 that I speak of, I'd guess there have been some changes.

Hey St'ers,
Cleo and I are in Christchurch for a week or so, looking for jobs. Any monkeys out there in this neck of the woods?
