I had an argument w/ my boss at work today. I told him that many NFL players are alchoholics and he refused to believe me. He insists that you can not perform at that level and be an alchoholic. I tried to tell him that when you are young and talented you can be a functioning alchoholic and a high level athlete at the same time. It catches up to you but many have pulled it off for awhile.
We have both read the LT book, North dalas 40 etc but my boss insists that the NFL has changed and that the level of play is so much higher now that the players can not drink during the season and keep their jobs.
I think he is dreaming and that most of those guys party hard and train hard?

The lifestyle of the average NFL player is not conducive to a long life. The average lifespan is in the upper 50's, lower for lineman. Steroids, alcohol, over eating and being ripped apart on sundays take their toll. Lineman who are mandated to check in at plus 300lbs don't change their habits when they retire and often balloon to over 400.
Even Sumo Wrestlers, the most obese atheletes on the planet have longer life spans than NFL players.
The NFL lifespan is about the same as that of the Russian male where alcohol plays a huge role.
All in all NFL players are by far the least healthy pro atheletes in America.

Slightly different example:
Chris Herren played NBA while hes was a hardcore junkie. And he played pretty damn good.
Theres a ESPN documentary about him called "Unguarded" which I found well worth watching.

NFL drunk driving:
In 2010, there were 16 arrests for driving under the influence, eight in 2011 (some league sources believe this lower number is an anomaly because of the lockout) and 19 so far in 2012.

What a silly thing to argue about unless you or your boss actually have meaningful insight into the lives of modern NFL players.
Unless you mean that it can sometimes be kind of fun to argue about things that actually do have right or wrong answers, even though neither of the people arguing have any idea what the right answer is.
OK, I'll play along: I think your boss is mostly right, maybe with a few exceptions.

Mostly we argue. I feel as a cured alchoholic though that i have a bit of an idea of what you can get away with when it comes to booze and athletics when you are in your 20's. I think my boss puts these guys on a pedastel and does not grasp the fact that they are human and they party large. I trained Martial arts with a guy who was a special teams linbacker for the giants in the early eightys. he claimed that everything in the NFL is bigger including the partying. Joe the boss thinks that none of them can party during the season and keep their jobs. I think my boss is in a bit of denial about his own alchohol problems..

Can't speak to the pros once they became pros, but in college I routinely partied during the football season with three players who were NCAAA Div 1 starters. One went on to be a many-time NFL pro bowler and a starter in the Superbowl.
I can't imagine he radically changed his habits once he went pro. Those dudes used to come by and rip bong hits before practice.
