Ms. Chief, Mighty Kakwa and I finally made it to Pinecone Lake on the August 4-5 weekend and enjoyed some gentle mountaineering in desolate wilderness in our own back yard.
Pinecone Lake is the centerpiece of Pinecone/Burke Provincial Park which links Garibaldi Park to Pitt Lake and Burke Mountain.
30k driving up the Mamquam Forest Service road gets you to the trailhead at 1300 meters.
Thirty minute walk from the truck to sub alpine splendor with ZERO bushwacking.
Six hours with moderate packs to a world class bivi site overlooking the lake. Bugs not too bad, grizzly bear did a cruise by one night following a goat and a deer checked out our campspot.
Clear hot weather, almost full moon for the bivis.
Pretty dreamy!

Thanks, Perry - that brings back some fond memories! Believe it or not, the first time I went to Pinecone Lake was before I met you.

Jeezuz Anders, you're one of the only people I've heard of actually getting to the lake. Way to go!
And apparently a loooooonnnnnggg time ago!
What in God's holy name possessed you to go there?

The same reason that the bear - no, not that one - went over the mountain. Maybe there were p'terodactyls nesting up there or something.
IIRC, the logging roads went fairly close to timberline to the west of the lake in about 1974, and so it was a moderate weekend trip. Nice ridge rambling and stuff.
See any blueberries?

What kind of dog is in the pictures? Ours is very similar in shape and markings, except all black tail. We have been trying to figure out what breed he is for some time. Also, has herding tendencies.

Mighty Kakwa is a Heinz 57 animal shelter orphan.
He apparently ran away from a local reservation and ended up adopted by a Chief. How ironic.
He was touted as mostly Blue Heeler but appears to have Shepherd and maybe Malemute as he howls like a Husky at sirens.
Loves to herd, totally stick crazy and can't stay out of the water.
Nice dog and great guy!
Here he is at about twelve weeks.
