There's a huge culture of that sort of thing in Cape Breton, Ca. Fiddle music and all, due to a huge Celtic influence. You can seem some of it in movies like Margaret's Museum and The New Waterford Girl. Very distinct.
My grandfather played a violin at barn dances in the area of southwest Saskatchewan where he homesteaded, as did settlers all across Canada. Do it yourself entertainment.

Hi Ken, I use to go to Contra dances in southern california. Contra dancing is line dancing with a caller. It is similar to what these folks were doing, though in your video they didn't have a caller and they were doing more step dancing. Its all folk dancing though and is fun.
Here is some Contra dancing.

At most dances they will have beginner dances where the caller teaches you how to do it. But once they really get going the caller just tells everyone what to do and you are expected to know what he or she means. Like square dancing but with folk tunes.
I would look up folks dances or Contra dances in your area. I use to go to dances in Ventura and Santa Barbara and a few times to New Port Beach. That was 20 years ago, so I don't know what they are doing now.

No need to. There are lots of dances that are open to the public and because these kinds of dances are for the family where even the kids get out and dance, beginners are welcome. It does help though to find someone to teach you the steps.
