Tom Patey is a very gifted writer and always a pleasure to find! This account of the 1958 British- Pakistani Forces Expedition appeared in The Mountain World 1960/61 published by the Swiss Foundation for Alpine Research and a great historical resource. Mike Banks wrote the official account 'Rakaposhi' and Tom crafted this one.
The plums were plentiful in the Karakoram in 1958. So, it turns out, were the apricots!
A major highpoint in Tom Patey's climbing exploits to be sure.

"...six weeks of physical drudgery"; well, I guess that pretty well sums it
up for a lot of those trips. Good work, Steve! Is there any way to crank up
the contrast on your scanner? It would make it so much easier to read.

Thanks Steve. Patey is my favorite climbing writer. I re-read "One Mans Mountains" from cover to cover about every 5 years.

I think about Patey often when I check my rappel system for a second time before leaning back.

Wow-Never saw that before. Patey is the real deal in satire and humor. Was that Dick Irvin that was with Swift?
And Tilman with his hopeless, hopeless." Classic !

One of my partners and I had memorized Patey's The Art Of Climbing Down Gracefully to such an extent that, when we were climbing, in the event a leader wanted to back off he no longer had to explain why but merely identify the number of the particular ploy.

Steve:
Thanks for posting and bumping magnificent material!
The quality of the writing leads me to realize that the seductive allure of climbing for me stemmed from the great writing on the subject. Patey, Herzog, Harrier, Pratt, even Harding: the quality of their writing and tales set the hooks in my soul so I gave climbing a try.
You bring the gems to ST.
Thanks!
