Nawang Gombu passed away last year as mentioned by Bruce on the 2011 Memorial thread. He climbed Everest with Jim Whittaker in 1963 and went on to summit Nanda Devi. This account appeared in the 1966 AAJ
From the World Guide to Mountains by John Cleare, 1979.
I hope the realms of bliss are yours now, Nawang. Much respect.

Thanks, Steve!
The always-reliable wikipedia reports the second ascent by an Indian expedition in 1964, and CIA "attempts" from 1965 - 68, during which they placed their notorious nuclear-powered spy device on the mountain. Did they get to the top? Interesting that the two to reach the top (Gombu and Norbu) were both Sherpas - IIRC, the backbone of the Chinese and Indian expeditions during that period were often Sherpas.

"It's not how big you are but how tightly you're wound" said Big Jim about the powerfully built Nawang Gombu when he gave a talk in Tucson in the early 1970s.
