I will be at a conference in Asheville next week and have a free afternoon.
Can I get to some climbing areas or do some scenic touring in a 6 hour period?
Unfortunately I can't take extra time off due to work.

Looking Glass is 45 minutes drive plus 1/2hour hike to the nose area, worth heading up for a look.

Another option for hiking only is mount mitchell state park, both are stellar.

I love looking glass.

Easiest access to the nose area, a 4 pitch classic 5.8 trad route.
have fun.

Edit: lots of great bouldering at rumbling bald near lake lure/chimney rock a 40 minute drive / 15 minute approach.

As Ezra said, Looking Glass is close. Rumbling Bald is also close, but may be a bit warm. Good bouldering if you're solo at the Bald.

6 hours is not enough. I command thee to spend a few hours at a Pub called Jack of the Wood. Its in downtown and on my top 10 list of pubs around the world. I go to pubs and I take them very seriously:) For real, great food great atmosphere. ( I don't really have a list but if I did......)

You will get tons of great suggestions on where to climb. I'll give you a suggestion for a great restaurant http://chaipani.net/ I make it a point to go there every time I am there. You will not be disappointed.

Rumbling Bald is your best bet if you're solo. Lotsa good climbs at the Glass, all grades, if you can find a partner.

Jack of the Wood is great.

Two words... The Wedge.

6 hours ain't nearly enuff time to wrastle any NC granite...

Go to Bent Creek Experimental forest and go on a walkabout. Then finish at the wedge, and go to white duck tacos for supper.
