Anyone climb Mount Shinn just behind Florance lake in California?

The west arete (on the right) for my knowledge does not have an assent. Thinking about bagging it this weekend.

It probably does have an ascent, but who cares? Do it. It looks good.

I don't know anyone who's done it, but it looks so tempting it's hard to believe that it hasn't seen an ascent. There are also a lot of climbers who don't record their FA's (I can think of about ten that I've done and never recorded).

So when do you want to go?

Ask the Florence Lk ferry pilot to drop you off at the foot bridge that crosses the San Joaquin River (instead of the regular landing) and avoid the swamp that lies hidden in the seeming direct off trail hiking route towards Mt Shinn. The map shows a little unnamed lake but its actually
a much much bigger swamp area of floating scum in pools and hungry mosquitoes.

Wading across was deemed madness. Go around.

Can't help you with the W arete, though I looked down that sucker a few times. Outward Bound used to climb that peak dozens of times every summer from the SW.

On my very first OB course (as instructor), we had a 'dude patrol' of 14 y/o's...one of them was named John, who on the first day of the course, was insistent that he was going to take his Bible with him. We were equally insistent he wasn't, because it was one of those coffee table versions that weigh about 12 lbs....

Throughout the trip, he proved himself to be a very unstable, worrisome kid- arguably a perfect candidate for an Outward Bound course. The first peak climb we did was Mt Shinn (via the SW- cl. 2-3)...all along the way, he fretted and whined, and told us regularly that he was sure this was the place he would die. We told him, ummm...no, that's not gonna happen, John.

At one point as we scrambled upward, John turned to me and asked solemnly..."if I die, will you eat my body?"
