The good judge, Elisha, named the peak for his cousin Alexander Winchell, a prominent geologist of the day.

Guns, booze, the flag and mountains. What's not to like?

Great start to a thread.

a fourth class peak which is a fun rest day summit from Dusy Basin,
saw in the register an entry from the "Bishop Leg and Lung" club, who apparently ride their bikes up to North Lake, run out to Mt. Winchell and climb it, then return home...

that would be a good workout..

There are some pretty eccentric judges. But, I wouldn't be surprised if there were some folk here who judge a good outing by similar criteria (running up a mountain, draping themselves in a flag, swigging from a flask, and posing while firing into the canyon). :)

probably because I completely screwed up the location! There is a Mt. Winchell at 37°06′12″N 118°31′33″ (37.10333N, 118.52583W) 13,781ft (4200m)... which you can get to via Bishop Pass...
then again, I might be remembering the register on Mt. Agassiz which would make slightly more sense...

...never mind...

I commend the intrepid photographer. As I, ahem, as I recall, the wind was from the north, gusty. I had to time the exposure for twelve seconds. The wind would have carried the bullet south. No way he could hope to hit Nevada, let alone carry the Owens. He lost the bet.

I did this 4th class in the '80s fresh from my last encounter with Bardini on the glacier the day before. Excellent summit, easily ticked. Airy and friendly climbing. An alpinist's gym. Did I say airy?

Absolutely my favorite "mountain top." Not "summit."

Krispy Kreme bump.
Judge Roy Bean: I fine this man, uh, $50 for disturbing the peace and $10 for lying around.

I think it's worth pointing out that in the picture he is not actually firing his gun. He is posing with it. Standing as he is, with his feet together in a balancey position, firing such a revolver could very well topple him.

Yeah and Tonto would have been standingg behind him

Not to bee too contrarian, but I fired a 357 Magnum from precisely that stance just south of Mammoth Mtn in 1976

Everything went fine until the fifth shot when I fell over, discharging my non-service revolver and nearly wounding my friend Smallfire Hawk in the knee.
