On this 4th of July, I thought I would post some pictures taken last week in the Independence/Onion Valley area in Owens Valley
Independence is situated in the Owens Valley between the 10,000 ft+ Inyo Mountains
and the 14,000+ Sierra Nevada
cool little town
Eastern Calif Museum
BIG mountains - Mt Williamson - lots of epics on this bad boy
Wildlife
lots of water flowing now
and a peaceful night camping along the Shepherd Pass road - timelapse centered on North Star

You're staying for the parade today?
I spent the 4th there once. It was a great party. All about family and the American way.

pud - nope, I had to move on. I love little towns like this, and the mountains around it are world class.

What's that buttress in the cirque next to Williamson? It's very obvious.
7th pic. The free-standing buttress in the cirque.

I lived above (upstairs, that is) the Fish Hatchery for three summers. It does get warm.

Beautiful shots of a cool little town.
The Winnedumah Country Inn would be the hotel, a classy B&B. I've put clients in there; they serve a good breakfast. I stayed down the street, though, at Ray's Den motel. Love the name.
From the front veranda of the Inn you look out over the courthouse to a small spire silhouetted on the crest of the Inyo Mountains. It's the namesake Winnedumah Monument, named by the Paiutes.
That French restaurant is the best food from Vegas clear up to the Mobil.
There's tons of unclimbed rock up around Williamson, and you get 6000 feet of humping your hardware to contemplate which of it to try.

The picture of the court house reminds me of when I had jury duty. Not a bad place for JD

The parade starts in 10 minutes. Classic that 395 gets rerouted for it.
The Owens Valley Growers CoOp Market is open today. Normal hours are Wed-Sun 8 am to 6 pm.
The Indy Coffee Roasting Company Cafe operates out of the CoOp kitchen Wed-Sun 6:30 am to 11 am. She is an excellent roaster! There is breakfast food during cafe hours.

They have the Slim Princess running now. They laid out a bit of track by the museum and they take it out under power.

Not actually in Independence, but close, the Fort Independence Travel Plaza and Casino has the cheapest gas on the 395, a fill-up there gets me to Mammoth and back.
