Don't carry a knife to a gun fight. All I have is a Spyderco Native and it mostly just opens boxes.

Take a cheap folding knife on the harness, for tearing rotten slings away.
And have an uber-bitchen Swiss Army knife in the Bivi Pouch, for opening cans . . . and also for the other tools.
A Leatherman is also nice, but don't carry it on the harness.
EDIT: I thought this was a climbing forum.
In the City, I prefer the katana, closely carried across the back, in a classical fashion, but beneath a coat or jacket. When affronted by malcreants, it comes out, quick-draw, like a tennis game service motion, and it's all it takes to cause the rodents to scurry away.
