Russell was once a pop icon. One of those figures remembered more for her persona and fame than her acting. But a big moment in American pop culture.

LA Times does a nice job on the obit:

well, i'll second the nomination--a sex goddess who didn't take herself too seriously, which is the best kind. and i see she was born in bemidji, my northwoods stomping ground.

And my father's mother was born in Bemidji, or nearby.

It is really sad. Kids today have no idea how important hay used to be.

the male version was victor mature, who also had the grace not to take himself too seriously. i guess he was quite a draw swashbuckling bare from the waist up in schlock pirate movies.

victor applied to get into an exclusive los angeles country club and was turned down because he was an actor--not so prestigious an occupation BITD. he fired back, "i'm not an actor, and i have 30 movies to prove it."

yea, bemidji--great fishing lake--almost got blown all the way across in a canoe by myself when the wind came up one day. kneel in the bow and dig for your life.
