I have a tradition each year where I look back at the music I've
listened to over the past year and pick an album or disc that I'd
want with me if I were stranded on a desert island. I call this my

D E S E R T * I S L A N D * D I S C

We all have 'em, albums that just hit it home for us and we know
that if stranded, we'd want 'em in our small collection. Over the
years I've developed a great collection of DID albums. But even
better, if others share their Desert Island Dics, we can see
what's been hot and poppin' over the past year, and we can check
out stuff that we'd otherwise not hear.

In honor of his passing this last year, my DID for '05 is a Chris Whitley disc.

Rocket House

Singing his own inventive Texas influenced, heroin-speed rhythms
and tunes, the songs here seem to bend time.

Really any Chris Whitley disc seems to do it and if you can find
his first, mostly acoustic disc ("Living With the Law"), good
luck and good listening.

Still, Rocket House gets my vote this year because it
couples Chris' own brand of scotching, slow electric slide
guitar with his uniquely styled dobro guitar rhythms. With
these he produces an active, psycedelic-styled sound that get's
you movin', yet you're still groovin' down.

So if you haven't had the chance, pick up a Whitley disc and
check out this brother of ours, he sings from a deep heart.

Happy 2006 to You All

I know it's a chick-disc but well crafted and haunting:

DID disc- no way could I cut it down to that. Any disc could drive me nutz after time.

With that said- this entire year I've been on a System of a Down kick.

Hypnotize and Mesmerize both are quality 2005 albums and are social criticism albums (a dying breed of band- though doesn't make much sense on a deserted isle).

The reason for the appreciation is the new sound, the break between chorus and stanza is livened by contrast. A post-punk effect? I don't know, but it rocks.

Munge,
System of a Down, sounds different, I'll have to check 'em out.

One disc? No way!! You got it right, what really inspiried you the past year. If you've got more than one, that's cool too.

Over the years, I've been turned on to all sorts of really cool stuff (oh, and some crappy stuff too, but that's usually a small %). Things like:

 Brand New Heavies
 Greyboy Allstars
 Wilco
 moe.
 Gomez
 Kelly Joe Phelps
 Southern Culture On The Skids

Sh^t that you normally don't hear on the radio.

So if you've got something that makes your leg shake (other than A4), let's hear about it.

Been grooving out to The Sea and Cake, and the various members' solo works-- Sam Prekop, Archer Prewitt. Snappy but a bit dreamy and whimsical pop songs, good morning music.

If the desert island was sunny, and no foul weather lurked on the horizon, it'd be just about right. So that's not quite what you're asking for I know, but still.
