detailed autobiography? You want stuff that wasn't in The Hard Years? Or one that covers the soft years as well?

'Teeth like tombstones and arms like bunches of bananas'. Who in Yosemite today could fit that description?

It is a bit odd, in that for practical purposes, the British haven't had an empire since the 1960s, and certainly not since giving Hong Kong back to the Chinese in 1997.

Congratulations to a true pioneer of modern rock climbing.
Eighty years! Quite an accomplishment considering the routes you put up.

We read about Joe Brown's hand jamming technique back in the early 1960's. A key point in the description seemed to be the technique of crossing a thumb across your palm. Frank Sacherer and I and others in Camp 4 discussed the idea that we needed to learn these techniques if we were ever to have a hope of free climbing Yosemite big walls. There were a number of us who started spending time on the cracks in the Iota and Reed's Pinnacle area; discussing how we thought Joe Brown might be doing it, and struggling to learn. What is now considered normal crack climbing techniques, seemed ridiculously unusual to us at the time. Our early awkward attempts were not impressive. At various times the group included Wally Reed, Gary Colliver, Chris Frederics, Jeff Foote, Loyd Price, Joe Faint, and others. I don't recall seeing Chuck Pratt show up for our agonizing sessions. With Frank's intense passion for it; we gradually learned to make our way up Chingando on the Iota, and the pitches on Reed's Direct. The first ascents of those routes were really done by mob-rule siege climbing. I would commonly use a layback rather than jamming; which never failed to irritate Frank, who felt I was working at cross purposes to our goal of learning to jam long cracks.

Given the current climate in the UK, I'd say we Canucks, Aussies, Kiwis and other former colonials have to save the Queen's ass not kiss it.

Tami, thank you for clarifying the situation re the biography (Happy 2011 by the way). I mentioned it on purpose (but as a gentle nudge) because (a)the stories of the Rock and Ice need to be told as they aren't getting any younger and (b)the biography has been a long time coming.
Good climbing!

Joe told me that, in fact, he was a contractor and builder, with a number of skills. The appellation of plumber seems to have stuck, however. When I talked with him several years ago he was looking for his tool kit and getting ready to do some work on his wife's house. He also talked about the awkward transition from nailed boots to vibram soles . . . how many of us can claim that experience? Commander Brown, I salute you! A hero for your time.
