I was dismayed to see a post on Facebook the other day reporting that a woman had gone missing. While I don't know her personally, we have a dozen mutual friends. She basically vanished without a trace on Friday and as of Sunday night, still hadn't been heard from. As word spread, total strangers started sharing the missing-person alert to their profiles, which was inspiring. Still, I had a bad feeling that she wouldn't be found alive, if ever, especially after a report came in that police had roughly located her iPhone (via cell-tower triangluation) to a bad part of Emeryville - a place she would never have gone.
Late Sunday night it was reported that she had escaped her abductors and called police, and was confused and scared. A bit later her husband posted that the police had located her and that she was being transported to the hospital. Yesterday she posted to FB that she had been carjacked, beaten, ect, and that she had been painted with white paint and told that her new name would be "White Out". She wrote that someone helped her escape with some of her stuff and told her to run.
I was already having a knott-so great week, and this really sent me over the top. The irony is that she is a healer / bodyworker and very loving to all people - the last type of person you could imagine this happening to. I'm sharing this here because I needed to vent.

maybe i am a moron....maybe i lead a sheltered life and don't ever think about racism....but i assume that she was black painted white? hard to tell from your post.

Sucks what she went through this, but very happy to hear she was able to get away. Hope she is doing ok.

She is white. She was told her new name would be "White Out". I'm going to go out on a limb and assume the cretins weren't Caucasian, but what do I know?

HK, I'm sorry to hear about your friends' friend.
While it is no consolation to her, or to anyone else who has suffered racially motivated abuse -- from insults all the way to physical violence and murder -- we have, as a society, made huge steps forward over the last two centuries. Most of us, especially those in large cities, live in the middle of a racial stewpot, and the amazing thing is that for the most part we don't even notice race any more.
Sadly, there are still of people who still live in the racial dark ages, and some of them do things like this.

Wow that sucks. I hope she's doing well.
Focus on someone helped her escape with some of her stuff and told her to run.
At least one of them had the guts to go against the mob and help her.

Right on guys. I should have used the world "hate" instead of "racism" - it seems unnecessarily inflammatory. These creeps obviously hate women, but I can't escape the feeling that it wasn't at least partially racially motivated.
The other night I was talking to some Koreans in my cab and they were saying that they didn't like being called "Asian-Americans" or "Korean-Americans" - "we are just Americans"...
I said "cool, I guess you can't call me Scottish-American then". We all had a good laugh.
I made the point that it's these types of characterizations that keeps segregation alive, and they agreed.

i would have said the same thing whether they were black, brown, aisn, purple, white....whatever...you know that somettimes the LAW actually arressts the RIGHT guy. hard to believe i know....

Normalized by population, blacks are 220 times more likely to be the victim of a hate crime than are whites.
On an individual level, no doubt, that sucks for our friend.
On a racial level, that sucks for blacks.
