On Saturday a team of 13 climbers and Andy Smith from the Forest service worked on the Lunch Rock trail and the connection from Lunch Rock to the west side of Tahquitz. The trail was improved with water bars, moving loose rocks, and smoothing out runnels. Just below Lunch Rock the trail was rerouted to avoid an loose gully and vastly improved. Additionally the route from Lunch Rock to the foo of Tahquitz was improved and better defined. As well side trails down the loose hillside were blocked.

We also informally agreed to start a climbers group to keep the trails up and provide stewardship to the Idyllwild climbing areas. If you would like to join this group, the Idyllwild Climbers Alliance, please email me at: jlucke@cmc.edu. The ICA is planning on doing a bigger event in May to get the trails ready for the new season.

By the way, we carried some trash bags, but didn't find any trash!

I was there Saturday climbing and saw your group at the parking lot and working throughout the day. I hit the trail just ahead of you and must say it was much better on the way down then the way up. GOOD JOB!! I spent the day soloing and had the place to myself. Just me, the rock, and clouds drifting by. Didn't see anyone else till the very end of the day. Thanks again for the trail work.

The plan is to do regular spring and fall maintenance, hence the alliance.

Thanks for organizing Jim! Hope your ankle gets better soon.

The Lunch rock trail is in ok shape for now but will always continue to degrade into an erosion gully. In the long run it would still be best to close and restore much of the existing trail which consists of maybe 100 (guess) very short steep switchbacks. Replace it with about 10-15 long switchbacks.

We would need a big group to sign up to take on such a task.

Thanks for the kudos. Now we need a few more climbers to join us in the Idyllwild Climbers Alliance.

As a follow up to the Adopt-a-Crag on October 23 the Idyllwild Climbers Alliance with considerable help from Andy Smith and Eric van Diem of the Forest Service has created signs for the climbers trail to Lunch Rock, the North side of Tahquitz, and Suicide. The signs were prepared by Joe Sheehy of the ICA while the posts were worked on by Jim Pinter-Lucke of the ICA and Eric van Diem. Andy and Eric did the actual placement of the sign post. They are buried in 2.5 feet with cement and rebar soundly securing the base.
Thanks to everyone who has helped. Looking forward to a big day in May.
