i'm going to check out cosumnes this friday--never been, but it looks good for for a day trip.

i have a friend with a bum knee who'd like to join, but she's worried about the approach, which several sites call "class 3." she can't boulder hop or scramble too well b/c of impact issues (climbing is okay on TR as long as no one gets to excitable while lowering her).

can anyone tell me what the approach is like? supposed to be only 10 minutes, and downhill, but does it include a lot of scrambling and/or stepping off of boulders?

or is there a way to avoid big piles of stones, uh, other than those we're going to climb?

thanks everyone.

I've taken 3 year olds down that trail. No real boulder hopping, just a steap dirty trail, and a couple spots you want to butt-scoot down (and a rickety 3 step ladder in one spot). Just be careful in the fall before the rains come, some sections get to be loose dusty spots, but nothing bad.

Also, if you are setting up any of the more popular top-ropes, have your friend rap down after setting up to avoid all the barely 3rd class stuff.

The ladder is gone. And don't forget to carve your initials into the tree at the top of dinkum...

Pronounced kun-sum-ness if you're from the flat lands.

Pronounced kun-soom-ness if you're from the hills.

thanks everyone. the gimp, who is neither, at least to the naked eye, a great big fat person nor a three-year old, exceeded expectations.

cosumnes is beautiful. especially in the evening light, which, with the advent of LEDs and variations of fluorescence, is the only light in which any of us can ever be guaranteed to be beautiful. it was pretty at noon, too. if dinkum was 170 feet instead of 4.2, it would be an uncontested sierra classic.

thanks for the beta.

I went there one time to top rope by myself and instead shared belays with Warren Harding and friends.

When I was living in that area, I never made it down there. Anyone have some climbing pics they could post up?
