I am nostalgic for my old Karrimor Whillans pack that disappeared into the ether years ago. You know the one; orange canvas, snap top, felt straps, uncomfortable as hell.

Who has one that is rotting in the closet?

Gave my (slightly newer but old) orange Karrimor to a young local Thai climber kid in Railey Thailand who went ape sh#t over having any pack at all....even with all the holes in the material. I didn't tell him that I had 5 more packs in my basement all much better than that POS or that I had taken this one 1/2 way around the world because as my oldest and biggest Piece of Sh*t pack, I was less worried of it being stolen so I'd brought it. The look in the kids eyes....priceless.

Good luck finding one Simon.

I would love to have another Karrimor Haston Alpiniste (the purple one, direct descendant of the Whillans)

Oh, and by the way, it is sac, not sack! :)

Jim... I had a Haston Alpinist SAC also! I did some multi-day route somewhere and used it as a bivi sac because it had that really long extension on it. When you tucked the extension in it seemed to take up an undue amount of the sac's volume.

Some random shots I have located along the way...

Mine was orange, but here is a red one with closeups.

An ad for the Sac:

In the hard-to-read ad above they list the Whillans Sac as "orange." I know mine was orange and seems like the lid was lime green. Mine, too, had plenty o' holes... that's what gave it its dignity!

Somewhere I have a picture of Blanchard (Real Blinny if you must) wearing the pack with a grotesquely distorted look of pain on his face. We were on our way to do the North Face of Quarter Dome and I had packed it so that the iron was poking him in the spine. He just walked the miles like that!

Ihateplastic, yeah the bivy sleeve was great. You open the lid up and pack a ton of extra crap in there if need be! I know what you mean about it taking up a lot of space. I know of at least one partner that cut his down. I can recall bivying in mine on two occasions.

Here is a photo of the Haston. Later versions (sometime after Dougal's passing I believe) dropped the Haston name and were just called Apliniste.

That Haston Alpinist actually carried pretty well. Damn if I know where this stuff went!

"That Haston Alpinist actually carried pretty well. Damn if I know where this stuff went! "

My sentiments exactly. My Alpiniste just plain got used up - a durable and rugged pack, but 20+ years of use was just to much for it!
