How close can one get a generic rental car to the Stone House? I've never been in the area, and have read that 4WD is "recommended, but not necessary" for Granite View Drive. Conditions do change, and my mileage may vary....

We'll be out that way next week, but looking for a long day, not a very, very long day, if possible.

Tnx

closer than I would take my Saab.

It's really not that bad. a VW bug (old style) can do it, and if you're squeamish it's only a few minutes farther to walk.

I've always thought a generic rental car was the baddest 4 wheel machine known to Man.
Hey, it's a rental!

You'll be fine. The road leans a little to the scary side, but besides that you just ride the hump and sides, you'll clear.

One time when Brutus and I drove to the trailhead in "The Cave" (Toyota 2wd truck) with wall gear, we shifted heavy gear to the uphill side, and he had me stand on the uphill side of the back bumper to "high side" the truck. Scared the bajeezus out of me (maybe he was just testing my fortitude...he had a fine sense of humor).

So there you have it...there's a short bit where the road leans alarmingly toward the steep canyon. There's a large lower parking area before that section, but once you go past the lower parking there's no turnaround until the trailhead. You could easily park low, scope the last bit, then drive it if you feel comfortable.

Have fun, stay safe.

Thanks all for the beta

I'll hike out the window with a full pack and grab a strap from the downhill side.

All rental cars are inherently off road vehicles. I thought all climbers knew this. Carry on.

Drove my Prius up there last October, and it has less clearance than a Honda Civic. The leaning section gave only momentary pause.

Highly recommended is the Mike Strassman Memorial Route. Great slab climbing, but STOUT. Consensus after about 5 ascents is 11a.

The Stone House was beautifully clean after Brutus Memorial, with prayer flags flying.
