New to the Bay Area and trying to figure out the logistics of weekend trips to Yosemite/Tuolumne. On previous week-long vacations out here we always lucked out with non-reserved sites. But on these weekend trips when I need to leave after work and won't get in until late on Friday what's the chance that there are still some first-come first-served sites still available? If all the sites are full where is the closest camping area? Is there a campground or National Forest on the drive in that might be convenient?
Thanks for any advice.

The problem is that if we tell you might be camped in the spot we wanted to bivy, but if you promise to have extra free beers... :>

CC, if it's the same spot I'm thinking of I turned on a gang of Germans to some whiskey and beers there a couple of weekends ago.
Good times!

For first come first served, I'd say never in the valley and sometimes in TM. If you go to the valley on a Friday bivi on USFS land and enter the park in the morning. It's my experience that the time taken hassling for a spot is not worth it for a weekend trip.
If TM, check the campground and, if full, go out of the park the other side and bivy in a USFS campground or other spot- I'm not sure of the current legality of pass bivi spots. I seem to recall a thread about the USFS tightening the noose.

I bivy on the road to Hetch Hetchy, about 1 mile after it turns of the main road around the first bridge. I've seen more cars doing the same way, there are some nice parking areas. So far I didn't get into trouble. I do believe it's about 40 min to the Valley and it is outside Yose park area.

Climbaholic- If you join the Rock Rendezvous group for $15 bucks a year annual fee, you will have access to their campsites, which are reserved in the Valley and Meadows almost every weekend. There is an online signup section open to members.
