Hello all!

Please bring on your ideas for where to take the super beginners climbing!

My little cousins are coming to visit in early July and want me to take them climbing. I need a place to take them (ages 12, 9 and 6) and possibly their parents climbing. The younger two have trouble doing relatively low angle 5.4 jug climbing. I feel confident that the oldest can handle at least 5.6. I live in Orange County and would like something as close as possible as they are already driving down from the Bay Area and probably are not going to want to spend much time on the road. Short approach and temperatures that are lower than Joshua Tree would be preferable. Only the oldest cousin is really interested in technical rock climbing. The other two would probably be happy if there are nearby rocks for scrambling. Thanks for the help!

P.S. I scouted out Tanglewood Slab in Big Bear (near the Pinnicals) and my girlfriend struggled with the approach and was still intimidated by the stone. Add on the fact that it's a two hour drive and I have almost written off that area.)

Big Rock, Lake Perris. Easy walk to climbs, 5.2-5.10 routes. Picnic tables, bathrooms, shade. Perfect for kids to start outdoors.

Thank you for the ideas so far. Would Big Rock be managable for a little kid? Is there any scambling that they can do near the crag?

What about areas near L.A.? I haven't been to Malibu Creek and imagine that it is too hard for kids. But what do you think? Stoney Point?

If I had grandkids in tow Big Rock would probably be my first choice.

There's some very easy slab around the right side of the rock. Boulders of all sizes on the hillside, a lake to drown worms in, Mud Hens to throw rocks at and otherwise annoy, Speed boats, jet skis and water skiers to watch and a pick nick area with shade and tables for when the sugar well runs dry.

It will be hot!

Pay to get in and don't do the obligatory dirtbag climbers hike in from the road.

Take em there and you will be their hero for life.
