Are you referring to Don Wilson's "California Mountaineering" in Joshua Tree? That was the first person I guided for in like'78...Unfortunately he passed away some time back:( He was a cool guy!

There was also a Don and Karen Wilson that used to climb a lot in Josh BITD...Haven't heard from them in a long time...Older Don Wilson passed from cancer I seem to recall, but it was some years back:(

Yeah, it was Don Wilson's California Mountaineering School. He had that little shop behind the market in Idyllwild. My first guiding gig as well. I even turned down a chance to guide Joe Namath's kid, when I realized how guiding killed my passion for climbing (too young to reconcile the two). I'm sorry to hear Don's gone. Did he ever tell you the story about being in the military and "rolling queers" til he got rolled himself? Did he ever show you his pubic hair sweater, a life's work from a multitude of stalls?
We did a fundraiser pancake b-fast to raise money to cover our Boy Scout Insurance, or maybe it was just to fund a trip several made to El Trono Blanco, s of the border. I didn't go. Someone coined it "St Juan Largo's Pancake Breakfast", obviously in Zappa's honor.
Ahh, Idyllwild.
Rob, could you post the California Mountaineering School flyer again? It doesn't come up on your old Stonemaster post. The way I understood it, Don asked a bunch of guys in C4 parking lot if he could use their names on his flyer, marketing and all. The guy was a character, crusty old desert rat

Yeah I've got a cool old brochure somewhere with "Big Al Bartlett" on the cover leading The Window Pane pitch of Ten Karat Gold at Suicide on it and it's a classic!! I'll try to find it...

Wow. I just discovered this thread and the request...
(<rant>Yeah, I know about the many broken image links in the Stonemasters Threads. Since we can no longer change links on ST after some defined amount of time, I've written to Chris Mac MANY TIMES about how a global search and replace could point to a new server for all my photos. To no avail. Sigh. Our collective historic threads need to be preserved, dontcha think?</rant>)
I'm guessing these are the scans you want. Notice the tiltfoolery that Wilson used in the brochure! And what a primo list of guides--who mostly never made a dime guiding for Don.
All the photos of Allen on Ten Karat Gold were taken by me. Here's how...

Some smart person could make more money than all these topo books combined just drawing from and editing the content of this forum into a history of climbing in the USA. We also get some pretty good UK history in here too.

Interesting that Steve and Hugh are listed in the brochure as instructors and guides - probably neither then was legally allowed to work in the US.
