Yvon appears in a nicely-photographed commercial for sustainable practices.
Historical shots of Great Pacific Iron Works.
He refers to piton damage and the evolution of chocks.
Also dam-removal for fish habitat

Yeah I saw that one. I was looking down at my computer, and was pretty surprised to ask myself if I just heard the word piton during the Oscars. Pretty cool commercial.

Certainly one of my heroes! For the record, both versions have footage featuring Yvon from Lito Tejada-Flores film of the 1968 first ascent of the "California Route" on FitzRoy; the first link has more footage than the second. (You can tell this footage as the guys are young and in an alpine environment). In the snow-climbing scene Doug Tompkins follows Yvon up the slope. Tompkins is another of my heroes ...

That was a terrible Oscars telecast overall! But Yvon's commercial was unexpected and well done.

Well it's a damn good thing that I know how to knap a Clovis Point out of chert. Unless stone spear heads ALSO count as technology, then I guess I'll be down to throwing rocks at bunny rabbits.

It worked for David taking down Goliath!

Maybe we should take pause, and reflect on the past, and look how it has/will effect the future!

Normally I would say "sellout!" ...but that was surprising well done and I felt it was really meaningful. Excellent!

Gimme a f*#king break. Technology also lets us discover wonders of the universe, and understand it better. I suppose that Werner would say that we shouldn't try to do that....

Humans are industrious and curious, as well as stupid and lazy, but don't confuse the two. Some strive to help/study/persevere, and others sit around and do bong-hits/ask for their handout.

I'll choose the industrious human. And just because it has 'industry' embedded in it's definition doesn't mean that humans aren't capable of being shepherds of the Earth.

Sometimes these ad hominem attacks on machines and technology are tiresome and unfounded.

and don't get wrong, bong-hits rock sometimes, but ya gotta keep a grip on reality.

Almost looks like some rock above Malibu (Santa Monicas) in that footage?

And, yeah...

Welcome Chris!

From that ol' fun hog movie, sounds like they almost missed you. Really, how close was that to you not being a part of that gig?

Wild stuff...

Here's a link to Yvon giving a speech "The Reluctant Businessman," put it on in the background, pretty interesting.

He is a great inspiration to a better world!

And welcome Chris Jones! What an honor.
