TR: Winter Ascent of Thunderbolt to Sill Traverse (w/3D Fly Through)
Thursday February 17, 2011 5:23pm
(reposted in the appropriate place)

On the weekend of Jan 14 Konstantin and I went up to the Palisades to do the traverse from Thunderbolt to Sill. We hadn't heard of anyone completing it in Winter so we thought it would be a good challenge (though people may already have). We got lucky with conditions and ended up sending after 3 days and one cold bivy on a slopey ledge at 14,000 ft.

Note: The TR contains a new feature with a 3D flythrough of the climb. Check it out!

I want to be the first to say KICK AZZ just from the title... now let's read

Edit: Lots o' laughs in the trip report, and sweet Google Earth tour! This brings the spraydown to a whole new level. Damn, might need a third person in the team just to manage the spray now!

One suggestion: show the fly-over tour without the embedded photographs, then let people interactively mouse-over the photos on their own navigation afterward.

Yes, we do love to spray. Thought that was what the Trip Report section was about...getting psyched and psyching others.

Good call on the suggestion nutjob. I will pass the word along to the Tomnod peeps.

This is definitely setting a new and higher standard of sorts. Most excellent layout. Thanks for the tour, I'm all juiced up now. Loved all the words, too.

Great! Really enjoyed that. What is a khram? I may never know.

A side note to the haters -

For a lot of us, the single best thing about a site like ST.com is when someone takes the time to share climbing stories.

If those stories contain pictures, even better. In fact, the more details and the more pictures, the better. This is the DNA of ST.

When we log into this site, we are hoping to find something exactly like what Snowey has shared here. Usually, we don't get it; usually, the front page is full of bullshit and we leave disappointed.

So please, for f*#k's sake, don't discourage Snowey or anyone else from posting their stuff here!

I'm not sure if it came through in my original post, but I think this adventure is awesome, if I was a woman I would want to do you both, and I love the spray.

Err... after re-reading that I guess it could be taken the wrong way!

So what is pullharder.org? Is it your personal site? a club site? Can others join?
Nice reports of other winter adventures...

Years ago, we were a small group of climbing partners who were going out and getting it done on a regular basis. We all had endless psyche, and great attitudes. One day, Shay and Nate started the blog and the rest has just been fun.

The group of people who post has varied over time as people moved, new awesome people joined our circle of friends and went on blog worthy adventures, etc. The "Who" section is a little outdated at this point, but funny, so we leave it. There are a lot of inside jokes, including the name of the site, but we're not a club. We're mostly just San Diego locals who like to play hard on the weekends and not take ourselves too seriously (for instance see the winter ukelele ascent of Whitney or the full moon ascent of The Vampire in cloaks).

Some of us focus on playing in the High Sierra year round (like Nate and Shay), and others are more focused on long hard free routes (like Roberto and I), but all of us absolutely love climbing and sharing the psyche. There's nothing better than helping someone pull harder...

You guys rock, always love catching up on your adventures.

Side note, you are super inspiring as a group and its partially because of your accomplishments and attitudes that I lost 25 pounds and have realized goals I never thought possible at this stage in my life :)

Thank you for clarifying Josh. I read other trip reports on your site a year or so ago (I was just starting hiking/climbing back than), and enjoyed them a lot. Especially the whole "not taking yourself serious" part and going for it in pirate etc outfits on Lone Pine Peak haha. Williamson report with wind storm also stands out in my memory. Nice to see you all going strong! Keep spraying! and safe climbing to you all!

You guys are upping the ante again. And you already had the thing pretty damn high!

Perfect conditions, jeez. A rare January to be this good, so of course you nailed a mighty big traverse. Friends from Santa Cruz snuck up El Cap that weekend too! I've skied all over the Sierra, pretty much everywhere, but kept ignoring this canyon even though it has been a summer home to me. Something about seeing the texture of the snow, though, and I'm grabbing my skis.

The 3-D thing is pretty graphic. Hoping I can adapt it to PPT for a show I'm working on right now. Thanks.

As ever, thanks for the stoke!

Thanks for the kind words! Doug, drop us an email and we can figure out a way to export the 3D tour for slideshow purposes.

In other news: We were ice climbing at Lee Vining this weekend and conditions were great. It was gorgeous up there after the storm.

Josh, did you ever get my email in regards to Totem Cams?

Great TR. That good block of weather sure did allow great stuff to get done this season!
