After a year of planning and talking a group of friends into going on trail for a hiking trip, the time came to head north...
Pre-dawn start, headed up the North Fork trail!
Camped at Iceberg Lake...
Aaron and I catch sunrise...
Jason and I start for East Face...
Self Portrait...
Jason...
Floating through the Fresh Air Traverse...
Meanwhile: the other guys made it to summit via Mountaineers Route...
Soon after Jason and I top out...
Walking back to camp...
We had a great trip with great weather. Spent 2 nights at the Whitney Portal campgrounds, had multiple bear encounters with no damages. One Jr.bear came right up to us at bear locker during campfire. Others were shoo'd off throughout the night.
Spent 2 nights at Iceberg Lake, hiked down on day 3. Favorites: looking at the colors that change so vividly. 1. The cobalt blue of the sky above. 2. Sunrise and the range of colors that change within 30 minutes. 3. Sunset: watching the last rays of sun flicker like a campfire against Mt. Russell as seen descending Mountaineers Route.
A couple of the guys had never been camping in the mountains before and this trip was an incredible for them. All of us had been training for year hiking local peaks with loaded packs and that paid off.
Thank you to SuperTopo for the detailed guide book and climbing topo, made for easy routefinding.
Thank you to all who have posted TR previously on Mt. Whitney and the East Face route. Information you gave and pics were a help in knowing whats up.
