On Saturday April 20, 2013 Bill McConachie, Frank Baker, & I spent the day on the Hogsback doing It's better with bacon & Hogwild (combined ages of 177 y). I had not done either route but Bill & Frank had done both of these fine routes. It was a warm, spectacular day with a light breeze and we had the place to ourselves. We did It's better with bacon in 5 (short ~ 100 ft) pitches and rapped the route in 3 raps w/two 60 m ropes. Bill donated a 1/2-inch tubular runner for a rap anchor on the tree at the top.

P1 (5.6): 2 thin (20 mm to 1.5 cm) en echelon cracks that take 1 or 2 nano stoppers.

P2 (5.6): bolts on face w/ thin dikes

P3 (5.7): lieback crack and face w/thin dikes

P4 (5.8): diehedral, some face & 1 roof

P5 (5.8): pass a couple of roofs to the top.

Looking up the route from the base.

Fun times climbing mellow routes at the Leap with friends!

The temp when we arrived at 9 am it was 37 degrees fahrenheit. It's Better with Bacon was in the shade until about 10 am. Chilly to start with and then pretty warm in the sun.

The campground gate was still locked, so there was no camping and no access to parking associated with the campground.

There were a handful of other parties that headed for the East Wall, Corrugation Corner, and other areas. Lots of smiles going around.

Here are a few more pics for your viewing pleasure ...

Doing the last short pitch, rather than bailing from the 4th belay, is worth doing for the views of the Leap from the top.

Getting down is easy. All 5 pitches are conveniently 30m or less in length for rapping with a single 60m rope. There are some decent sized trees on top from which to rap, but bring some web or cord - please don't drape or string your rope directly around a tree. The web I slung around our rap tree was 0.5-inch tubular - rated to about 2,000 lbs - not runner strength, but adequate for our purposes.

Enjoy!
