Alpine Bouldering (MT Backwaters TR)
Monday September 14, 2009 3:12pm
After various roped adventures over the years in this alpine zone, Kevin decided to finally venture in with some pads. Brady and I joined him, and we set about to explore the high cirque's boulders.

Well, I was getting skunked...but Kevin and Brady were catching cutthroats...tasty indeed!

Not sure what the plan is yet Jeremy, though it does sound tempting...Pat is down in Vedauwoo currently, but I'm not sure what his plan is...if we do venture that way, you'll know!

You beat me to the punch on the TR Tom, but it's all good since now I just have to add pics to a fine existing photo report.

Where's mojede?

Is that cirque in the Absaroka-Beartooth, or some other range? The peak with the talus couloir running from top to bottom looks a lot like Whitetail Pk, but without the snow in the couloir. (I sure hope Whitetail still has permanent snow in the couloir.)

looks pretty shitty, and I bet there's not even a guide to that area, personally I like to know I can get up a route before I try, otherwise what's the point. Probably no other climbers nearby to spay with/sandbag either. You Montana boys sure are weird. JK;) Reminds me of my secret spot near LA, no people, no topo, lots of adventure. Just rock, water and what you make of it. Nice pics...

This needs to be back on the front page for sure. Nice guys, looks like the stress of the daily grind melted off both of you. Keep it up.

oh pah, there's no rock that that good anywhere in montuna, and the local fishing sucks. that and all all of the cute betties are south of fort collins.

fess up kingsbury (et al) -- all those photos were actually taken within 60 miles of bishop. right?

fess up or Lupo 'The Icepick' may soon pay you a visit (in good conscience i did try to talk him out of it, but he's fast howling out of the ice, fangs first, and is beyond all reason).

as for the the rest of you, move on, nothing to see here...

the winters in montucky are 8 months long, most of the state looks like north dakota, and of course there are the annual plagues of locusts and rabid wolves (contact Rockjox for details on the latter).

_all_ the hip kids know there is absolutely nothing worth climbing between boulder and the bugaboos.

very pretty stuff there, unsettling to see it here.
glad i spent my prime in that country. that rock is so featured, compact and colorful.
it demands versatility, strikes me as thinking (wo)man's stone.

what it lacks in obvious continous lines it makes up for with intricately disguised possibilties.
often major features don't yield mindless protection ie. corners without cracks,
fractures being intermittant, sealed or beveled and bottomed.

yet, assuming decent angle, plenty of opportunites to gain purchase, move up where the picture changes quickly.
therein lies the commitment factor. this is dubious terrain for bumbling.

figure on spending more time sorting through and finding solutions. it's remarkable how many
unblank faces offer uniformly angled edges too sloping to crimp.

love the pictures with undisturbed turf, how much longer?
we used to snicker that the general public would not suffer the weather and approaches
and work so hard to unearth this stuff but that premise is getting shaky as pressure builds.

being up there has a way of sharpening your appreciation for the distant, well known areas
that have a demonstrated knack for holding their own loyal enthusiastic crowds

Thanks y'all! It really was an awesome time in there...I'm still sore though!

For fear of the fang, I'll have to agree with pip...it's real close to Bishop...hell of a weekend journey! ;)

hooblie is right, it's pretty interesting stone to 'read'...making for some intriguing movement...I don't think you'll have to worry about the hoards in this particular area though, as it's fairly arduous to access...

You're correct blue, Mojede has been visiting the area for 10+ years now...this is the first time without a rope...

here's a couple of TRs from the same area, but with the rope.
