It all started back in early May, when I reconnected with Mel Johnston and John Rich at Smith Rock.

I've known both of these guys for 40 years, since I was about 16 years old!

John and I climbed Cathedral Peak together back in June, and had chatted about doing something else this season.
In August he asked about doing something further south, but I only had a small window in September before taking my daughter to UC Santa Barbara for school. So we settled on the West Ridge of Mt. Conness. Mel came along from Oregon to do a number of other things with John, so the September challenge was on!

I had been in from the East three times before, for the Harding Route and the North Ridge. I could be persuaded, but as I told John, I didn't want to "climb the whole damn mountain to get to the base!"
So we all agreed to pack it in to Upper Young Lakes and bivy before heading up to the ridge proper.

We had a little bit of everything! Clouds, sun, rain, heat, hail, snow, snail and WIND!!
But old guys are stubborn, and don't want to repeat long approaches, so we weren't easily dissuaded and endeavored to persevere!

Once again I apologize for the cell phone TR, but as one of my old Master Sergeants used to say "You brought what you brung gimper!"

Neat stuff, Bruce! Did you get your bear canister for this?
Any bears???
Oh, and what stove did you eventually use?

Steve! Yes, we had 2 bear canisters between 3 of us. John has one, and they're super easy to rent at the wilderness permit office.
We used John's MSR stove. I didn't buy a jetboil yet.

What a disreputable crew! I wish I'd been along -- I'd have fit right in.

Say hi to Mel for me. It was great to meet him at Smith.

Ghost, you weren't invited because your chili's outperformed mine this year. One of the fat headed horses got to my big Ghost chili plant just when it started to kick ass. Par for the season...

Mid-September - the start of the iffy weather season. It can be perfect or it can be rainy and cold. Glad you were prepared.
Thanks for the lovely photos.

Thanks everyone!! Steelmonkey, none. Coming from 1,000ft elevation and being out of shape I tried to keep the weight down...

I carried the damn beret up there though, you better believe I was putting it on!

The wind was howling and moaning out of this notch!

Reilly, you sport weenie, if you had ever done anything other than clip bolts in a gym, you'd know the basic underlying principle of all other forms of climbing:

It don't have to be fun, to be fun!

Nicely done!

Conness was on my list this summer, but it didn't happen.

Somehow, sparkling Domes with short approaches always took priority!

Maybe next year.

Thanks for the support everyone!
It's good to know that us geezers, gals, kids, sport weenies, posers and part timers of all stripes can get noticed here in our own little online mountain magazine!

So many of these pictures are much better after clicking to see the enlarged version. I didn't realize that cell phone pix would get that much larger! Some are not great, from trying to zoom too far. But I have decided it's worth posting a few more. Hope you enjoy!

Fun stuff!
I did my own geezer trip a couple summers ago on Conness.
Glad we too opted for the Young Lakes approach as it added a whole lot more time to just be in the area.

That lake is a bust for fishing though:-)
What's the story with the snake?
